With red carpets unraveling, eager voters preparing themselves for screenings, and studios upping their campaign game, the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards are kicking things off with their complete list of nominees, and Jordan Peele’s Get Out is in the lead with four nominations, including Best Feature.
Following the end of his and Keegan Michael-Key’s sketch comedy series Key & Peele, writer/director Jordan Peele made an unexpected turn to horror with Get Out. The film was made on a meager $4.5 million budget, but managed to reel in a domestic box office gross of $175 million, while also earning a near-perfect 99 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, with four Gotham Awards nominations (including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor), the enduring mass appeal of Get Out is proving its place among the releases of 2017. Whether these nominations hint at awards consideration come time for the Oscars remains to be seen, though.
Other notable nominations include the adaptation of Andre Aciman’s novel Call Me by Your Name, starring Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet, Sean Baker’s follow-up to 2015’s Tangerine, The Florida Project, and the Margot Robbie-starring Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya.
Several filmmakers and actors will also receive IFP tributes during the ceremony, including Nicole Kidman, Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Coppola, Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum, cinematographer Ed Lachman, and Al Gore. Dee Rees’ Mudbound will also receive a Gotham Jury Award for its collective ensemble performance.
