It’s Oscar season. And Oscar season also means it is Razzie season. The Razzies - or Golden Raspberry Awards - have been around since 1981 and offers awards to the worst movies of the year. It takes a critical look at the movies that will probably not be honored the following night at the Academy Awards.
The Razzies are decided on by paying members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, hundreds of film professionals, journalists, and movie fans. The ceremony is purposefully designed to look like a low-budget version of the Oscars, though unlike the Oscars, it is rare for people to accept their awards. In the awards history, only five people have shown up to accept their award in person, though seven others have requested their awards after the ceremony. Several of the recipients are also Oscar winners, sometimes winning both awards in the same year, such as Sandra Bullock for Worst Actress and Worst Screen Couple (All About Steve) and Best Actress (The Blind Side) in 2010 and Brian Helgeland for Worst Screenplay (The Postman) and Best Adapted Screenplay (L.A. Confidential) in 1998.
The nominees for the 2017 Razzies will be chosen from the current shortlist, which is available on Comic Book Movie. The official nominees will be announced on January 23, one day before the Oscar nominations are unveiled. Most of the awards categories have Oscar counterparts, such as Worst Leading and Supporting Actors and Actresses, Worst Director, Worst Picture, and Worst Screenplay.
But there is also the Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff, or Sequel Award, a category many would agree is worthy of the Razzies. Among the most highly nominated films thus far are Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice with eight nominations, The Divergent Series: Allegiant with six, and Assassin’s Creed with five.
Another interesting thing that differentiates the Razzies from the Oscars is that people can be nominated for more than one movie in the same category. That does not mean that they receive multiple nominations for the same awards, instead it means that the work they did on both films is equally terrible and combined are worth the Razzie. For example, this year Jeremy Irons is nominated for worst supporting actor for both Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Assassin’s Creed.
Again, this is the shortlist, not the official nominations. Those will be announced on January 23. The 37th Golden Raspberry Awards themselves will be presented live on February 25, 2017.
