NBC releases three new promos to hype the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, along with the comedic camaraderie between hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh.
Not only are Samberg and Oh known mostly for their television work - Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Grey’s Anatomy, respectively - they’ve also won Golden Globe Awards for their past performances. Samberg, who rose to fame as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, won the “Best Actor - Television Series Musical or Comedy” in 2014 for his portrayal of police officer Jake Peralta on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which previously aired on Fox for five seasons before being picked up by NBC for season 6. Meanwhile, Oh starred as Cristina Yang for 24 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy from 2005 to 2014, earning a Golden Globe Award in 2006 for “Best Supporting Actress - Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.”
To hype the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, in which 93 members of the foreign press “recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign,” NBC released three promos featuring Samberg and Oh. In one clip entitled “The Elephant in the Room,” the hosts walk to a retro beat while referencing a popular American idiom about taboo topics. As it turns out, there’s a literal elephant in an adjacent room, prompting nervous energy from Samberg while teasing a show that’s known for its party-like atmosphere. In the second clip, the hosts stand back-to-back for a soap opera parody that accentuates their focused gazes and sensual dialogue. In this case, both hosts speak single words like “gold” and “glitter” before ending with the statement that “all of these are words.” In the last promo, NBC stages Samberg and Oh as “best friends,” with both hosts awkwardly attempting a “best friends handshake.” The promo cuts to past clips of the awards show before returning to Samberg and Oh while noting that “everybody wins."
Last year, Late Night’s Seth Meyers hosted the Golden Globes by himself at the longtime venue The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. For the 2019 show, Samberg and Oh represent a more diverse approach, allowing for an even livelier atmosphere. Last month, the official Golden Globes nominations were announced, with Marvel’s Black Panther earning a nod for Best Drama in the motion picture category and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse landing a nomination for Best Animated Motion Picture.
As the award season formats continue to change, audiences can expect to see a wide representation of mainstream films, whether they’re traditional Hollywood dramas and comedies or studio blockbuster productions.
