The 2020 Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and other awards shows are around the corner, and here’s when they air. 2019’s cinematically prosperous year has all built up to this: the awards season. Deeply seeded in the filmmaking process is the plight for award nominations and critical praise, as it is in our nature as an audience to applaud, celebrate, and consume things that stand atop the rest.
That being said, Hollywood has found a number of ways to celebrate their productions over the years, and many of them have become annual pop culture events in their own right. It is rare that films nominated for one of the more prestigious of these events won’t go out of their way to flaunt that fact.
Here are the most important film awards programs this awards season: what they are, instructions on the best ways to watch them, as well as the dates and times of each.
The Golden Globes - January 5
Hosted by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. One of the first mega award shows to air every season, it is often considered to not only be the starting off point for the awards season but also a precursor to how the Academy Awards may shape up later on.
Leading the nominations this year is Noah Baumbach’s painstaking drama Marriage Story with six, followed by Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with five apiece. This year’s Golden Globes will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.

Screen Actors Guild Awards - January 19
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are voted on and hosted every year by SAG-AFTRA, a labor union that represents approximately 160,000 film and television actors, journalists, and personalities worldwide. The primary differentiation between this award shows and others is that the SAG awards only considers acting performances; so there will be no awards handed out to directors, or even a best picture (the top prize is the Best Ensemble Performance). Leading this year’s nominations are Bombshell, The Irishman, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The host of the 2020 SAG Awards has yet to be announced. Robert De Niro will achieve its Lifetime Achievement Award.

BAFTA Awards - February 2
